De-Matting Policy

What happens to a dog’s coat when it gets matted:

  • Stops air circulation to the skin, causing hot spots, bacterial and fungal infections
  • Encourages fleas, ticks, maggots and other parasites to lurk in the coat causing skin infections
  • Matted fur binds in a way that it causes  pain to your dog when they move or lay down
  • Skin underneath the matt is usually raw and inflamed
  • Matted coats don’t dry properly and can lead to rotting fur and skin

When carrying out a health check

When carrying out a health check, should the customer’s dog’s coat be very matted, the customer will be contacted immediately to discuss the options if it involves a groom contrary to their original instructions. In the event of any dog needing a shave/clip due to excessive matting, the customer should be aware that irritation may occur. The uncovering of nicks, cuts or other potential problems which have been hidden by the matted hair may also arise.

Coat King Groomers shall not be held liable for any after-grooming effects of matt clipping or any problems uncovered on a badly matted/neglected coat.  This could include, but is not limited to the following;

  • Itchiness
  • Skin redness
  • Self-inflicted irritation or abrasions from excessive external rubbing

Risk when using clippers when matted

The customer should be aware that there is a much higher risk that their dog’s skin could be nicked with the clippers as the blade has to get underneath the matts in order to remove the coat. Every effort will be made to avoid this happening. There is also a strong chance that their dog’s skin will become irritated during the clipping process. Medicated shampoo will be used to help soothe any irritation that may occur.

Severe matting

If not treated, a matted coat could cause future health problems, therefore every effort will be made to remove a matted coat. In extreme circumstances, if the process becomes too stressful or painful for the dog, Coat King Groomers may recommend they are de-matted under sedation by a veterinarian. It is the objective of Coat King Groomers that each dog has a stress free experience, therefore no dog will be subjected to prolonged discomfort.

Excessively matted ears

If the customer’s dog has excessively matted ears, please be aware that when the matting is removed with clippers, as the blood vessels have been previously restricted by the tight matted hair, sometimes upon releasing this pressure it can cause the blood to rush to the tips of the ears, causing the ears to split at the tips and bleed. Although everything will be done to avoid this happening e.g. clipping in stages) this is sometimes unavoidable.

Understanding these risks

Coat King Groomers will not be held liable for any of the above named associated processes and all medical problems that may be uncovered and/or occur during the stripping and de-matting process will not be the responsibility or liability of Coat King Groomers. Should the customer’s dog require veterinarian care after or during the process, Coat King Groomers will not be responsible or liable for any veterinarian fees.
